I was telling MaiOkinokiyo about Rework- a fabulous, motivating & definitely inspiring business book.. when i came across excerpt of An Awesome Book - a book for kids as fabulously inspiring as Rework. Definitely will order it if Kinokuniya doesn’t have it in stock.

Sarah’s toilet training journey: Part 2 - The Eye Opener

Even how hard i tried to convince her that even mama&daddy go in and out the toilet all day long everytime we need to pee, she still thinks that this whole idea of toileting isn’t that important. Hmmph. I was doomed. But not for long :), I decided to head to Kinokuniya and buy some books for some inspiration. I bought this awesome parent guide book - Mommy! I Have To Go Potty for me and this colourful instructional book for Sarah:

She liked it to bits! She asked me to read it to her a few times the day we bought the book, and the next day, she insisted on wearing her Hello Kitty underpants and wanted to pee in her green potty chair! Yay!  The book was such an eye opener for her of this whole toileting concept. She’s now more willing to accept this training process, how i’m delighted! This is a record of her toileting practice to date:

22/2: Wearing underpants after morning shower, we then constantly reminded her of potty time. She peed 3x during the day. Wearing underpants after evening shower—but once she slept, i slowly changed her into diapers.

23/2: While playing at the kitchen, she peed! *arghhh* i was so frustrated she didn’t tell me she wanted to pee, i clean up the mess sambil berleter “kan dah tahu kalau nak kencing kena pergi potty kan dah kotor mama kena clean up (yada yada yada…) “ and changed her into diapers without asking her.

24/2: After shower, she said “Nak pakai pampers sebab nanti Qaisarah kencing..” o_O. I think she was feeling insecure and down after i scolded her yesterday—totally my fault :(

26/2: Confident to try again! She’s in her underpants from morning to before evening nap.

5/3: We’re going out, and she doesn’t want to wear her diapers! o_O! just before we went out, she wanted to go to the big (adult) potty (somehow she doesn’t like the potty seat so we didn’t use that. We have an Ikea bathroom stool for her to use in the bathroom so her feet won’t be hanging while she’s at the wc). And she successfully did #2 at the big potty! *clap*clap*.  After that, I still insist for her to wear diapers to go out, luckily she agreed *phew* (mama still not ready to handle accidents outside the house!)

8/3: She’s in her underpants most of the day. But near nap time, she demanded her diapers. I guess she was still not confident that she could control her bladder while she’s sleeping.

17/3: We went out for dinner with her diaperless! Before we went out, we tell her she must seat on the potty first (eventhough she kept on telling us “tak mau kencing”), and after seating on the potty for a while, she managed to pee!

19/3: Accidents in front of the tv. Syok sangat tengok Lion King she didn’t realized her bladder is full. This time, I just clean up the mess in a matter-of-fact manner (pro-tip: keep away all carpets during training period!). She wanted to wear the diaper after that, but i assure her that “it’s ok for accidents to happens, you will remember to go to the toilet after this”. Unfortunately, I went out for a while after that, and Mr.Daddy called me saying she pee&poop’d in front of the TV. *yikes*. Later when i asked her why didn’t she go to the toilet to poopee, she said “Daddy was asleep. I don’t want to poop in the small potty. Nanti tak muat” LOL, no wonder she always wanted to use the wc to poop! She felt that her small potty chair couldn’t handle the amount of her poop haha. *oops* TMI. And she always had me to assist her climbing up the Ikea stool, but unfortunately i wasn’t there that time.

25/3: I let her napping with her underpants. But i placed a waterproof bedpad to protect the mattress in front of the tv in case an accident happens. Indeed , it did. She suddenly woke up, crying loudly, and i knew why she cried when i felt that her underpants & tshirt were wet. She was crying profusely, prolly angry (that her nap is disturbed), sad (that she wet her favourite tshirt) and embarassed (that she peed in her pants after days of successfully using the potty with no accidents). I hugged her & calmed her that everything’s ok, and she then went back to sleep in a pair of clean underpants (pro-tip: Ikea has this waterproof mattress cover for single-bed. So Sarah’s bed is now fully protected. Awesome!)

26/3: During nap time, suddenly she woke up, and cried. o_O. “Sarah kencing ke?” She shook her head but still crying. Then she told me she wanted to poop. Since she was still crying (must be sooo uncomfortable to be waken up by the feeling of needing to go *huhu*), i carried her to the potty. After cleaning up. She’s back to her bed, cont to sleep. Yay!

27/3: We ate at McD, and Sarah peed at the public toilet, for the first time (eh, not the first time, last week we went swimming at the public pool and she went out the pool 2x to pee at the changing room! hehe, very civilized, unlike me went i was a kid! haha)

*********

She’s already telling me if she needed to pee&poop, both when she’s in the house or out swimming at the public pool. She can loosen up when she’s at the potty, eventhough she thought she didn’t feel like peeing yet. She’s now happy using the potty for pooping, singing out loud (Glee’s Endless Love to be exact) to kill the boredom of ‘waiting’ LOL*cute*. And she’s slowly aware of her ‘needing to go’ during naptime. All these are still in practice stage and i won’t expect there’ll be no more accidents. The fact that she’s willing to improve from day to day showed me that she’s emotionally ready to be fully toilet trained, and I am so happy for her!

Night time dryness? Hmm…well we’ll see! Coz I haven’t got into that chapter yet hoho…

Sarah’s toilet training journey: Part 1 - Introduction to toileting

It was ages since i repeatedly receiving parenting e-newletters that shouts ‘your toddler is ready to be potty trained!’ and from day to day i was longing to train Sarah. but how? She showed some sign of readiness, but where do i start?

At 1.5 year old, we bought her a potty chair. We also bought her a soft potty seat to be place on a real wc, coz once we brought the potty chair home, she was using it as a chair and a toy to play with her teddy bears rather than treating it as a potty. Anyway, i didn’t think she’s physically & socially ready for it yet, so we hold on the thought of training her.

[[left pic]: No, i didn’t buy her BabyBjorn potty chair, but her ‘cap ayam’ potty looks almost like this :). [right pic]: Her potty seat doesn’t have that balancing handle. Sorry, this is the best pic i could find via www to show you how a potty seat look like :P]

At 2 years old, we send her to playschool. One morning during shower before school, she shrieked and call me “mama apa ni?” i was surprised and excited (*parents are excited of the weirdest things hahaha*) to see that she poop’d on the bathroom floor!! I felt that maybe…maybe it’s the time to try potty training again! I then bought her a pair of training pants—but unfortunately we didn’t have time to train her as we were usually not at home during weekends.
Therefore I planned to train her during my maternity leave—that would be the most suitable period as i’ll be at home all the time.

In December 2009, i juggled between caring a new baby and potty training a toddler. It was a hell hard time i tell ya. At the time when i expected her to be a big girl & elder daughter i can count on to (yea right? a 2.5 y.o….oh come’on!), she was becoming more & more like a baby (duh..). I know she was intellectually ready because she’s aware when she’s pooping, but she just let her diaper full of poop for hours if not for somebody smelled something stinking from her! *haihh*. Anyway, i proceeded with my plan, training her a few hours a day. Just let her be in her Dora The Explorer underpants and t-shirt. But before the first 20mins that i was supposed to remind her of potty time, she was already wetting the carpet! *arghh*. Dora did cry when she’s wet *huhu*. The next day, i put her on her training pants, unfortunately, it leaked too! *damn you training pants!*. The following day, i put her on sis dJ’s GroBaby, hoping that she’ll tell me when she wet the diaper, plus, since she’s in a cd,  there’ll be no mess all over the place!

We placed her green potty chair outside the bathroom door since that’s what she wanted, and somehow, once in a while, when i brought her to use the potty, she really peed! Well, that was once in a while lah.. most of the times she peed in her diapers, and there’s no way she’s having her bm without her diapers on!

Hmmm…kayuh pelan-pelan
